Brian Knutsen
Since joining the firm of Smith and Lowney in early 2007, Brian’s work has focused on representation of environmental citizen groups seeking to enforce federal environmental laws. Working to most effectively realize his clients’ interests, Brian’s work has included collaboration with federal and state agencies, negotiations with regulated entities, as well as litigation. Major environmental laws with which he has experience include the Clean Water Act, the Endangered Species Act, the National Environmental Policy Act, the Clean Air Act and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act.

Brian graduated from St. Louis University in 2000 with bachelor’s degrees in Geology and Environmental Sciences. This background has proven invaluable in enabling him not only to understand complex scientific issues involved in his legal practice, but also to explain them in a comprehensible manner to the courts and other non-scientists.

Brian received his law degree from Lewis and Clark Law School in Portland, Oregon. Graduating with honors in 2004, he also received a certificate in Environmental and Natural Resources Law. While there, he served on the editorial board for Environmental Law, the oldest law review dedicated solely to environmental issues.

Prior to moving back to the Pacific Northwest, Brian practiced water law with the firm of Moses, Wittemyer, Harrison and Woodruff in Boulder, Colorado. He gained invaluable litigation experience during this time, working on a heavy load of cases and appeals before Colorado State District Court, various State agencies, and the Colorado Supreme Court.
